Small Towns of Russia - English Forum

Minor Town Mayor
Welcome!
Greetings to everyone!

We are glad to welcome you to the English forum
on our Small Towns of Russia site!

During the last two years
we have received a lot of similar questions
sent from many wonderful distant lands.
We wrote to people in New Zealand and Argentina,
North America and South Africa.

And we decide finally to make a place
where non-Russian speaking travellers
could ask us for specific information
and share their knowledge and experience
with others.

We also would be really glad to help you find
companions in your trips.

Welcome to our forum, and, of course,
welcome to Russia!

Yours,
Minor Town Mayor.

Welcome!
Dear Minor Town Mayor!
There is much more to Russia than Moskow and St. Petersburg.
I hope your site might encourage travel to smaller towns. I am
trying to make arrangements to visit Solvygedosk and Veliky Ustyug but am having trouble. Are there hotels available? Any suggestions as to transport from Vologda. Thank you.

Welcome!
Hi,

there is some info regarding hotels in Veliky Ustiug on 'the Vologda oblast' site (you have probably already seen it):
http://www.vologda-oblast.ru/main.asp?V=397&LNG=ENG
and Vologda travel agencies phone numbers on the russian version of the site:
http://www.vologda-oblast.ru/main.asp?V=330&LNG=RUS - you will find a list of 18 agencies there, agencies under numbers 2,4,7,8,10,14 are "inturist" - they can help with bookings.

regards.

Veliky Ustyug and Solvychegodsk
Dear Warren Wilkins!

Sorry for the delay - I was in expedition and returned just 2 hours ago.
Personally, I think that if you do speak Russian, even a tiny little bit,
you should avoid any of those "Inturist" or other foreigner-oriented
agencies. If you want to learn something about the "real Russia" -
do it without them and you will never regret this.

Please, if you still need hotel addresses, train and bus schedules
or any other specific information - do not hesitate to write me
vokati@cityline.ru

Yours,
Anton Tilipman.

Welcome!
Dear Minor Town Mayor! Recently returned from our trip to Vologda, Tot'ma, and Veliky Ustyug.I especially enjoyed the little hotel in Tot'ma and the Dyed Moroz post office in Veliky Ustyug. The well written letters and booklets from Russian children at the post office were impressive. Also we were able to see Solvygedosk. We attended Easter services at St. Procopius Sobor in Veliky Ustyug; we walked back to the hotel at 3:00AM in the dark. Looking forward to more of small town Russia in the future.Thank you for this site.

Welcome!
Dear Minor Town Mayor!
I have read that the first news about Staraya Russa were in year 1167.
Is it possible, anyway that this nice town was already existing in year 1031 ?
I am writing a comic and historical novel in the site www.letterealdirettore.it and I am describing a voyage of Vikings from Birka (bear Stockholm) to Istanbul, passing by Staraya Russa, in 1031.
The novel is written in Italian, and is absolutely free. It is just for hobby :)
Thank you very much
Guido Botteri

my nickname in the site where I write, is "shelburn"

Inquiry on Cozmodemyansk
Dear Nathaniel Dolan!Try Kozmodemyansk and you should get plenty of information or at least I did on a netscape search. It is a small town on the Volga and looks like a great place to visit. It was named after Saints Cosmos and Damian. In Russian they would not use the C for a K sound.Transliterations can cause trouble.

English names for monasteries
Dear Jarmo,

what precisely do you need? Exact official names or translation of the names you give? For instance, Vedeno-Ostrovsky Ojat monastery you can not translate, since there are only geographic terms in the name (Ojat is a river). It must also have an official name, do you need translation of that one?

English names for monasteries
Dear Jarmo!
If you need the literal translation here they are:
Aleksandr Svisrskij monastery
Monastery of St. Alexander Svirsky (Svir' is a name of river)

Vedeno-Ostrovskij Ojat monastery
Vvedeno (Vvedenskiy in full) means "of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple", Ostrovskiy is a proper name of a location, Ojat' is a name of a river.

Spasskaja monastery in Vasozero
Spasskiy (masculine gender)means "of the Saviour"

Pokrovo-Tervenitskij monastery
Pokrovo (Pokrovskiy in full) means "of the Intercession", Tervenichi as a name of a village.

Best regards from Moscow

Uglich Singers
Hello,

I was in Uglich a few weeks ago, and at the Cathedral of our Saviour's Transfiguration, I saw a group of singers that usually perform there. Someone mentioned they were actually from Novgorod. I was wondering if anyone knew what they were called and how I might get in touch with them.

Thanks,

Dear Wolfgang Dankwarth!
There are some buses per week from German cities (Berlin, Hannover etc.)to Moscow. Travel time Berlin-Moscow about 38 hours. Link: www.eurolines.ru
Sadly, in that case you'll need a Byelorussian double transit visa.
From the same bus station where you arrive in Moscow (called "Kazansky") you can take a direct express bus to Ryazan'.

Best regards from Moscow

Hallo Wolfgang Dankwarth!

Dear Dale Jr!

Sorochino is a village in the Kalachinsky district ('rayon') of Omsk region ('oblast'), east of Omsk.

As to the other one, I'm afraid the spelling is wrong (sounds definitely non-Russian). Check it once again.

Brun
Dear Lenochka!

I think you should check the spelling. There's no town called Brun on the Don or anywhere else in Russia. It could be a village or stanitsa (cossak settlement), in which case it could only be located with a map. Also, note that the Don flows through several oblasts, namely Tula, Lipetsk, Voronezh and Rostov. The "Cossak country" encompasses the steppes south of Voronezh and north/north-east of Rostov, so that's probably where you should look for it. Try to find a (topo) map of the Rostov oblast on the net.
